There are numerous places
to visit in Birmingham, Alabama, and quite a few things to do in
Birmingham, Alabama and nearby areas.
The area is comprised
of a number of cities and municipalities: Hoover, Mountain Brook,
Homewood, Trussville, Irondale, etc., and these municipalities generally
have shopping areas and offer places to visit and things to do.
The City of Birmingham
proper is largely commercial, its buildings mostly housing offices
with some businesses and stores. A few areas located within Birmingham
city limits that offer things to do: Five Points South (restaurants),
Highland Park (restaurants), the Birmingham Zoo, and Birmingham
Botanical Gardens. Birmingham also has several performance venues
and several theatres (largely amateur groups).
Oak Mountain State Park,
located south of Birmingham, offers swimming, boating (canoe and
paddleboat rental), biking, trails, a golf course, an "experimental
farm" with animals (great for kids), and picnic areas.
The City of Hoover has
numerous parks and recreational areas.
The McWane Center is
a great place for children of all ages.
There's a symphony orchestra,
a ballet, and a museum.
The Birmimgham Civil
Rights Institute commemorates the civil rights struggle and offers
unforgettable visual remembrances.
Dining is a major Birmingham
activity and the area offers countless restaurants and cuisines.
